Odontophobia is the fear of dentistry and receiving dental treatment.
Fear of the dentist is common. It is estimated that 75% or people experience some degree of dental fear, whilst 5-10% suffer from acute anxiety which can lead to severe panic attacks.
Palaeontologists from North America discovered the fossilised jaw bone of Labidosaurus hamatus, a one-metre long lipped lizard, which existed nearly 200 million years ago in the Permian period of the Palaeozoic era, and concluded that it is possibly the earliest discovered animal to have suffered from toothache.
It turns out that men and women are looking for the same thing after all……straight white teeth!
